Enjoy the New Year with Your New Smile Thanks to Dental Damage Prevention

Did you know that the lifestyle habits you partake in can severely hinder your oral health? One of the easiest ways to cause harm to your teeth is through dental damage that arises from lifestyle choices and high-risk activities in your daily life. Although it is important always make sure you are doing your part to clean your teeth daily, make sure you’re protecting your teeth from a physical standpoint on a daily basis as well.

In order to protect your smile, it is a good idea to always avoid bad habits and lifestyle choices that can severely hinder your oral health. This includes products such as smoking or chewing tobacco as well as using drugs. Any one of these bad habits can destroy your oral health immediately, including causing dental damage in the form of stained teeth or bad breath. In addition, they can cause serious infections to arise and can even lead to tooth loss and oral throat cancer.

Another common form of dental damage arises due to sports. Sports, specifically contact sports, are extremely hazardous to an individual’s oral health because they can easily cause dental damage to occur. Even a single blow to the face can disrupt your smile and knock out multiple teeth. Thus, it is always a good idea to wear the appropriate safety equipment to protect your smile whenever possible. This includes wearing helmets, face masks, and mouth guards when applicable.

Another common form of dental damage arises due to mouth jewelry. Although mouth jewelry is often worn as an aesthetic statement and a fashion choice, it can severely hinder your oral health in numerous ways. Lip and tongue rings often require additional care, as oral ailments including infections can arise. In addition, nerve damage can occur, as well as cracked teeth, oral inflammation, and severe gum tissue laceration. Furthermore, broken pieces from mouth jewelry can pose as choking hazards.

There truly is no better way to enhance your smile than with dental damage prevention treatments. When It Comes to Your Teeth, It Isn’t Easy Being a Teen

As a teen, a host of peer pressures await. However, with all of the hustle and bustle for kids to fit into their preferred social circles, it is often a time when their oral health get neglected or mistreated. When it comes to your teeth, it isn’t easy being a teen. Here are some of the oral health risks you may be facing:

– Smiles of teenagers are subject to a variety of health risks, including natural ones. Wisdom teeth grow in during their teen years, and they tend to come with a host of problems including potential infections, malocclusions, growth issues, and lingering jaw pain.

– Your mouth is often at risk as a teen due to the amount of sports and similar high-risk activities it is exposed to. Protect your smile during contact sports by wearing mouth guards, face masks, and head gear when available.

– Although mouth jewelry is often considered in fashion, especially amongst teens, it is important to understand the health risks that come with it. Mouth jewelry can pose a choking hazard and even crack or chip your teeth if they come into contact with them at any time. In addition, serious infectious diseases such as hepatitis can be linked to mouth jewelry.

– Although smoking can lead to serious health disorders throughout your body, it begins by attacking your oral health, including darkening your teeth and gums and increasing your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

– Do not partake in any peer-pressure situations as a teen that can lead to drugs, even recreational ones as they can deliver negative consequences for your oral health.

There Is Help for Bleeding Gums

At Gill Family Dentistry, Dr. Amandeep Gill and our team want you to know how important oral care is for your gum health. Because your gums support your pearly whites, you will want to keep them in tip-top shape! Following are some tips we would like to share with you if you are experiencing bleeding gums:

– Limit your consumption of sugar and sugary drinks, and increase your intake of vegetables. When you do eat sugar, rinse well with water afterwards and brush your teeth to limit the exposure to teeth.

– Certain medications, such as blood thinners, can cause bleeding of the gums or interfere with saliva flow by causing dry mouth, a condition which allows oral bacteria to thrive. Your doctor may be able to switch medications or alter the dosage to help you.

– If you smoke, the toxins can actually interfere with your gum’s ability to receive nutrients and can cause inflammation. As the gums bleed, harmful bacteria which live along the gumline can enter the bloodstream via the ulcers in the gums and travel to your organs to cause inflammation.

– Bleeding gums are actually contagious by spreading harmful amounts of bacteria. If you or your partner has a lot of oral bacteria, avoid sharing drinks, keep your toothbrushes from touching, and be aware that kissing will spread the bacteria and make you more susceptible to bleeding gums.

– It is so important to brush your teeth at least twice daily. Using an electric toothbrush can massage the gums which increases nutrient absorption into the gums by stimulating blood flow.

– Floss at least once each day to remove dental plaque, a biofilm made of bacteria and waste products. If you have difficulty flossing, a water flosser may be a good investment to remove bacteria between the teeth.

– Keep up with professional dental cleanings to remove tartar (hardened plaque). Dr. Amandeep Gill may recommend more frequent dental cleanings, antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), or gum surgery to help alleviate bleeding gums.
