Dental Care for Children: The Tips You Need to Take Care of Your Child’s Smile

If you want your child to have the best oral health possible, there are things you need to do to achieve that goal. Generally, children aren’t able to care for their smiles all on their own, which is why it’s up to the parents to do what needs to be done. So, to help you care for your child’s gums and chompers, our Gill Family Dentistry team recommends that you do the following things on a regular basis:

Properly clean the smile
When your child’s first tooth grows into the mouth around 6 months of age, it’s time to start brushing. For children under the age of 3, it’s best to brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of toothpaste. For children between 3 and 6, it’s best to use the same type of toothbrush but a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Make sure you brush their teeth twice a day and start flossing when two teeth grow in next to each other.

Bring your child into the office
Your child’s first visit is essential, which is why we recommend that you bring them into our office six months after their first tooth erupts and no later than their first birthday. During this appointment, the dentist will gently examine your child’s smile, will give you the tips you need, and will answer any questions you have.

Take advantage of fluoride
If you want your child to have strong and healthy teeth, fluoride is the ticket. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens and nourishes your child’s chompers and prevents dental cavities. It’s best to take advantage of fluoride as much as possible by using fluoride toothpaste when you brush your child’s teeth.

Avoid dental issues
Many people tend to put sugary drinks in their children’s bottles and dip the pacifiers in honey or sugar. Please do not do these things. These actions can promote tooth decay and other problems.

Smiling Brighter With Gum Recontouring

When you think about ways to improve your smile, you might think of teeth whitening, dental veneers, or some other cosmetic procedure. You might not think about your gums. But they are just as much of your smile as your teeth, and their appearance greatly influences how a smile looks. Gum recontouring can help give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

Gum recontouring, also known as crown lengthening or gingivectomy, is a process of shaping gums and removing excess material. Due to a variety of factors, some people have high gum lines. This creates what is called a “gummy smile,” where one’s teeth look shorter and smaller than they really are. Gum recontouring can reverse this and give you a more normal smile. During your procedure, Dr. Amandeep S Gill will use a state-of-the-art laser tool that helps ensure a painless experience. You will be back to normal in no time.

While a valuable cosmetic treatment, gum recontouring is also used to help facilitate other procedures. For example, if one’s gums are too high, a replacement crown may be difficult or impossible to attach properly. They can also interfere with treating a fracture on the root of a tooth, and even with braces.

If you want to improve your smile, you might benefit from working on your gums. If you would like to learn more about gum recontouring, as well as the other cosmetic dental procedures we offer at Gill Family Dentistry, please call our Modesto, [st], office today.
